This booklet is aimed at all English-speaking visitors, but especially at the soldiers of the American Armed Forces, who will stay for a longer period in our state. The idea for such a booklet came from the Baye- rische Landtag (Bavarian Parlia- ment), which on June 22, 1989, decided "to publish an easily- understood guide on the inter- esting political, economic and social aspects of the American soldiers' host land as well as for other English-speaking guests in their mother ton- gue." The Bayerische Landes- zentrale für politische Bildungsar- beit (the Bavarian State Office for Political Education) was de- signated to carry out this pro- ject, since it is the office charged with providing the public with basic information and with stimulating and furthering participation in political life.
